Tips for Buying Plants
  1. Buy plants that are cold hardy to our region.
  2. Check the sun/shade requirements on plants to see if they are right for your yard.   It is important to install plants according to their moisture/drainage requirements.  For instance, the pine tree in the picture to the right was planted in an area that collected water. The roots grew shallow and .... the picture says the rest.
  3. Buy plants that are not going to outgrow the space you plant them in. This is especially true for fast growing trees like silver maples, willows, and river birches (River birch juvenile bark vs. River birch mature bark).

Tips for Planting

  1. 'Don't just dig a hole, prepare a site.' This popular phrase is used to remind homeowners to dig a hole 3 times the width of the root ball but no deeper than the root ball. This way, the roots can more easily penetrate the surrounding soil.
  2. Remove the tie and pull back the burlap at least from the top of the root ball. An even better idea is to remove the burlap and the cage. Be careful not to lose the soil around the roots.
  3. Don't plant too shallow or too deep. We usually recommend planting level with the grade or even an inch higher, just in case the plant settles in the planting hole.
  4. Water while backfilling the first half of the soil to avoid leaving air pockets. Fill the rest of the way with loose soil and lightly tamp the soil. Spread mulch to conserve moisture.

Well-chosen plants that are planted correctly can add significantly to the value of your property. Although we do not plant ourselves, we can make recommendations for landscape design and installation companies in the area. We encourage our customers to get involved in the selection process. Drive around town and look at properties to see what you like. Browse around the garden centers and see what varieties they have.
